That sweet transvestite and his motley crew do the time warp again in a 35th anniversary revival! Complete with sass from the audience, cascading toilet paper and an array of other audience participation props, this deliberately kitschy rock 'n' roll Sci-fi Gothic event is more fun than ever.
Richard O'Brien got his start in theatre when he played Herod in a single performance of Jesus Christ Superstar on the London West End. He quit the show when the producers asked him to tap-dance in the show. While unemployed, O'Brien began writing the opus that would become his career signature, The Rocky Horror Show.
The show ran originally in the UK during Summer, 1973 in previews before eventually closing in 1980, long after the movie had hit the silver screens. The show ran only for 1 month on Broadway before being closed due to poor reviews in 1975.
Of course, the movie came out in the same year and closed after one weekend, but literally created the midnight movie market as it still continues to run in theatres around the world (having grossed almost $200 million, not bad for a $1 million production budget).
Rocky is, of course, a cult favorite and the music is amazing. Audiences continue to enjoy the fantastic melodies that O'Brien spawned and groove their way across the theatre to the Time Warp.
The ACE Theatre production is using the score from the 2000 Broadway Revival, including Brad's new song "Once In A While". This arrangement has a harder edge that will delight long-standing fans of the movie and theatrical productions.
Audience participation is definitely encouraged. Fans will be able to purchase Rocky Party Bags at the theatre, including many party favor items (such as cards, rice, newspapers) as well as a callback guide to allow fans to join in the fun.
So bring your rowdy attitude, and put on your very best dareware and get ready to PARTY!! Complete with midnight shows.
Costume party on midnight on October 31st for all Rocky fans! Be a Transylvanian!
